Diseased tree? Save it or remove it?

Here's a guide to help you make an informed decision. We all want to save the trees and "pulling the plug" on a diseased tree is always the last choice. Well let's start with first identifying the problems before making a decision.

Identifying Tree Disease

Early detection is crucial. Look for:

  • Leaf Discoloration: Yellowing or browning outside of autumn or unusual spotting.
  • Premature Leaf Drop: Leaves falling earlier than usual.
  • Stunted Growth: Noticeable slowdown in growth compared to previous years.
  • Bark Issues: Wounds, peeling bark, or fungal growths, especially near the base.
  • Cankers: Sunken, discolored areas of dead bark.
  • Misshapen Leaves: Leaves not reaching full size or appearing deformed.
  • Excessive Sap: Increased sap or resin production.
  • Wilting: Wilting leaves despite adequate soil moisture.

Diseases That Often Require Tree Removal

Some diseases that pose more significant risks:

  • Dutch Elm Disease: A fungal disease spread by elm bark beetles, leading to rapid decline in elm trees.
  • Oak Wilt: A fungal infection that spreads swiftly among oak trees, potentially killing a tree within a single season.
  • Emerald Ash Borer: An infestation by beetles causing severe damage to ash trees, often necessitating removal to prevent further spread.

Assessing Whether to Save or Remove

Consider the following:

  • Extent of Damage: If more than half of the tree is affected, recovery is unlikely.
  • Structural Stability: Leaning trees or those with large, hollow sections may pose safety risks.
  • Age and Health: Younger trees with healthy root systems have a better chance of recovery.
  • Safety Risks: Any tree posing a threat to people or property should be carefully evaluated.

Options for Saving a Diseased Tree

If caught early:

  • Pruning: Remove infected or damaged branches to prevent disease spread.
  • Treatments: Fungicidal sprays or systemic injections may be effective against certain diseases and pests.
  • Soil and Water Management: Improve soil quality and ensure proper watering practices to support tree health.
  • Cabling and Bracing: Provide structural support to weakened branches.
