What matters is not the calendar, it is where the cut lands and how quickly an oak wound gets sealed. Most trees can be trimmed year-round. We time each cut to the species and its growth patterns, sanitize tools between trees, and seal every oak cut immediately with pruning sealer. For mature trees, a full trim every 2-3 years is common.

Can you trim oak trees right now?

Yes. Tree Scouts trims oaks year round by doing it the right way: sanitized tools between every tree and every oak cut sealed immediately with pruning sealer. Those protocols are what protect oaks from oak wilt in any season, including February through June when the beetles that spread the fungus are most active. If a tree needs work, there's no reason to wait months for it.

How much does tree trimming cost?

It comes down to the size of the tree and how hard it is to work in, so treat these as ranges rather than a quote. A single mature tree in the 20 to 40 foot range usually lands around $375 to $575. A larger tree with more underbrush to clear runs closer to $575 to $750. Trees over 40 feet that need a climber working through several canopy zones are typically $1,000 to $1,250, and the true giants get a custom bid after we look at them. The estimate is free, an ISA Certified Arborist walks the property with you, and you get a written price before any work starts.

How often should trees be trimmed?

Most mature trees do well on a full trim every 2 to 3 years. Young trees benefit from a light structural prune once they have been in the ground a couple of years, then every few years while they are setting their shape, which is the work that prevents the expensive problems later. Deadwood removal is separate and can happen whenever you notice it. If you are not sure where your trees are in that cycle, we will tell you on a free estimate.

Are there local rules about pruning oaks?

A few Central Texas cities have oak wilt ordinances. Lakeway and Bee Cave restrict oak pruning between February 1 and June 30, and we handle scheduling around that for you. Everywhere else there is no seasonal restriction, and oaks can be pruned in any month when the work is done properly: sanitized tools between trees and every cut sealed within minutes.
